The Brooklyn Nets were left scrambling after Kevin Durant requested a trade on Thursday, just hours before NBA free agency opened up. The bombshell trade request didn't prevent the Nets from securing a couple of key pieces in free agency, as both Patty Mills and Nic Claxton have agreed to extend their stay in Brooklyn, according to ESPN's NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

Mills is set to return to the Nets on a new two-year deal that will pay him $14.5 million. The 33-year-old, who will soon be 34, averaged 11.4 points, 2.3 assists, and 1.9 rebounds per game last year. He shot just 40.8% from the field, but was a hyper-efficient 40% shooter from 3-point range, averaging 7.0 attempts per game from beyond the arc.

The 13-year veteran will return to Brooklyn, even amid the uncertainty surrounding the team after Durant's trade request and the Kyrie Irving saga, which may still result in a trade.

As for Claxton, the center has signed on for a two-year $20 million deal, putting him right in line with contract signed by the likes of Mo Bamba, and Isaiah Hartenstein, who are earning $21 million and $16.5 million on their respective two-year deals.

Claxton, 23, averaged 8.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game last year, logging 20.7 minutes per night across 47 games. It was his third year in Brooklyn, and his most productive to date.

Now, he's had his stay with the team extended by two more years, which will keep him in Brooklyn through the 2023-24 season. He'll be only 25 when his contract expires, so if he's able to impress during the next two seasons, he could play himself into a nice payday in the 2024 offseason.
