The New York Knicks emerged as one of the first potential landing spots for Kyrie Irving after news broke that he was at an “impasse” with the Brooklyn Nets with regard to a contract extension. Irving moving to the Nets' most bitter rivals was almost hard to fathom, but apparently, Kyrie's camp believed this was a legitimate option for the enigmatic star.

A new report suggests, however, that Kyrie making the move across town just isn't realistic. According to an anonymous source, New York just does not have a significant level of enthusiasm to make this blockbuster deal happen (h/t Ric Bucher of FOX Sports):

A league source with intimate knowledge of the Knicks’ thinking dismissed the possibility of Irving moving across town. They don’t have the necessary salary-cap room to sign Irving as a free agent nor would they be interested in trading for him. It’s hard to imagine owner James Dolan even engaging with a team he considers a bitter rival, one that he believes encroached on the Knicks’ territory by moving from Rutherford, New Jersey, to Brooklyn.

“Not happening,” the source said.

This would have been a huge slap in the face for Nets fans, so I guess they'd be happy to hear that Kyrie isn't moving to their cross-town rivals. Nevertheless, this does not make the situation any better. Irving staying in Brooklyn next season still isn't a lock, and he could very well be jumping ship in the near future.
