Tim Tebow doesn't know exactly how to relate to Kyler Murray's recent decision to play professional football over professional baseball. But the Florida Gators legend does know a thing or two about being a two-sport athlete, embarking on a baseball career in 2016 after it became clear his days of playing quarterback in the NFL were numbered. Tebow fared far better than most anyone anticipated on the diamond, getting invited to the New York Mets' training camp after spending two seasons in the team's farm system. He was then assigned to the team's Double-A affiliate, making the midseason All-Star game before suffering a season-ending injury to his right hand.
Murray, of course, won't be playing pro baseball anytime soon after announcing last month that he would continue his athletic career exclusively on the gridiron. Before the former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback made that controversial choice, though, he spoke with Tebow, another Heisman Trophy-winning signal-caller.
“You know what? Don’t do it for your agents, or your friends and sometimes necessarily even your family,” Tebow says he told Murray, per Mike Fitzpatrick of The Washington Times. “Do it for what’s on your heart, and don’t let other people define you. You’re going to have all these coaches that you look up to and everybody else that’s going to tell you what they think, but what’s most important is following your heart and your passion. And so, I don’t know, hopefully he did that.”
Good advice.
Murray, who threw for 41 touchdowns and rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2018 during his first season as a starter, is one of the upcoming NFL draft's most polarizing prospects. Some believe he should be in consideration for the number one overall pick, while others maintain his diminutive stature renders Murray unworthy of a first-round selection.
