The NFL is working with the NAIA to make women’s flag football a recognized college sport. The NAIA is a college athletics association that represents small college schools across the United States.

The NFL along with the NAIA announced they would be launching women’s flag football in hopes that it would be an official varsity sport by 2021.

“Football is for everyone,” NFL vice president Troy Vincent said in a statement via Yahoo Sports. “This groundbreaking and historic joint venture provides an opportunity for the values, fun and competitive environment of football to be enjoyed as a varsity sport by female student-athletes attending NAIA institutions across America.”

The NAIA hopes to have a showcase in the fall for women hoping to join a team, with the first full season in the Spring of 2021. The hope is a championship will be held in 2022.

”The NAIA is thrilled to partner with the NFL and [Reigning Champs Experiences] in launching women’s flag football,” NAIA president Jim Carr said. “This is a fantastic opportunity for our members to expand their athletics programming with support from valuable partners like RCX and one of the most relevant and successful professional sports leagues in the world.”

To have an invitational championship at least 25 teams will need to be involved in the league. To have a full championship, there will need to be at least 40 schools involved in the league.

More and more women have been getting involved in football the last few years, and this is another step in the right direction. Who knows, maybe the next step will be for Division I teams to have flag football.
