According to a recent report from the Associated Press, erstwhile NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick has started a COVID-19 relief fund for minority communities that have been affected by the disease.

“Black and brown communities are being disproportionately devastated by COVID-19 because of hundreds of years of structural racism,” Kaepernick stated in a post on his Instagram account.

Kaepernick initially seeded the fund with $100,000.

The 32-year-old NFL veteran was widely lauded as one of the most promising young quarterbacks in the league . Kaepernick led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl in his second season in the league (and first as a full-time starter).

However, Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the national anthem during games in protest of the treatment of minorities and the state of social injustice in America has led to him being seemingly “blacklisted” by the league at large.

As such, Kaepernick has not played in three seasons, last suiting up for the 49ers in the 2016 season.

Of course, defenders of the NFL’s decision to deny Kaepernick a chance to return look to his final season in San Francisco. He went 1-10 and had an ESPN QBR of only 49.5.

In terms of his efforts to combat COVID-19, this virulent needs to be fought by anyone and everyone. Of course, it starts with social distancing. Make sure to wash your hands regularly and thoroughly and wear a mask and gloves if possible if you have to go out in public.

While everyone wants this end soon, we must all do our part – like Kaepernick – to help curtail this horrific pandemic.
