Jadeveon Clowney forced NFL teams to reach breaking point
Jadeveon Clowney is considered by some to be one of the most dangerous pass rushers in the NFL today. Despite that, he is still a free agent this late in the offseason.
As known by many, Clowney has been asking for a ton of money. With that said, according to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, NFL teams are not happy with the negotiations and have reached their breaking points.
“I’ve talked to multiple teams that have done the dance with Bus Cook, Clowney’s agent, and they’re tired of it,” Robinson reported (h/t Matt Johnson of MSN.com) “… Teams are done, they’re just done. Like, ‘All right, man. Whatever. You know what our stance is, you know what our numbers are. We’re moving on'”
As a result of his refusal to budge from his asking price, Clowney has remained unsigned. However, that didn’t stop fans from wondering why teams do not want to pay him, with some believing the NFL pass rusher is not all that great.
For what it’s worth, Clowney has never had 10 sacks in a season. He had zero in his rookie season (2014), although that was in just four games to be fair. The next year, he had 4.5 sacks in 13 games, then six sacks in 14 games in 2016.
Clowney then increased it to 9.5 sacks in 16 games in 2017 and nine sacks in 15 outings in 2018.
In 2019, the NFL star pass rusher recorded just three sacks in 13 matches. He set new career-highs in forced fumbles (4), interceptions (1) and defensive touchdowns (2), but the tackles and sacks were way down.
So there are two serious problems. First, Clowney has played in 16 games just once in his career, which might make teams wonder just how reliable he could be. Second, the sacks are nothing to write home about. Even in his best seasons, he has not cracked double-digits.
The potential is 100 percent still there, and there is definitely a lot to love about Clowney’s game. Nonetheless, NFL teams need to see the production, and at the numbers Jadeveon Clowney is asking for, they don’t seem to think he’s worth it.
