CBS analyst Tony Romo made headlines after his lucrative new deal was revealed. It appears the initial reports have been downplayed.

The deal Romo signed was previously supposed to pay him $17 million a year. According to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post, the full value of the deal actually averages out to $18 million per year:

Romo’s salary is $17.5 million, but factoring in all the perks, it is worth $18 million a year, according to sources.

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas took to social media to express his displeasure with the fact that Romo is making more than the majority of players in the NFL. It is safe to say that the update on the potential earnings of his deal are only going to add salt to the wound for Thomas.

Romo has established himself as one of football's elite broadcasters since making the transition to the booth following his playing days with the Dallas Cowboys. As a result, he was set to garner plenty of interest from competing networks like ESPN had CBS let him hit the market as a free agent.

The report indicates that the deal from CBS, which was significantly larger than his initial three-year, $10 million contract, came after their failed attempts to sign Peyton Manning as a broadcaster. However, it appears Manning's hesitance to come to a decision ultimately spurred them to make sure that they secured Tony Romo for the long haul. In doing so, he has managed to draw the ire of players and fellow colleagues alike.
