Why Lions Could Cover the Spread

The Detroit Lions have had a forgettable season, but have shown some fight towards the end, winning two out of their last four games. The Lions have a 2-12-1 record and are 4th in the NFC North division.

For more insight on the Lions-Seahawks matchup in Week 17, listen below:

Since trading for Jared Goff, the Lions offense has not been as explosive as when they had Matthew Stafford at the helm. The Lions average 17.3 points and 314.9 yards per game. They rank last in the NFL in red-zone scoring percentage (43.24%).

However, the Lions looked great when upsetting the Arizona Cardinals a few weeks ago. Detroit beat Arizona 30-12 at home and dominated both sides of the ball. Jared Goff was stellar as he finished with 216 passing yards and three touchdowns. This win is what the Lions needed in order to motivate them for years to come. They will be facing a vulnerable Seattle team who will be missing the playoffs and the fate of Russell Wilson is up in the air for next season.

Defensively, the Lions rank towards the bottom half of the league in opponent stats. They rank 25th in opponent points per game (25.7), 27th in opponent yards per game (372.1) and 31st in opponent red-zone scoring percentage (69.39%). However, the Lions are 4-0 against the spread in the last four games versus the NFC and 4-0 against the spread in their last four Week 17 games. They have nothing to lose and will be looking to end the season on a high note.

Why Seahawks Could Cover the Spread

The Seattle Seahawks are having a season in which they will look to put behind them. They had high expectations entering the season, knowing it was likely Russell Wilson's final season in Seattle. However, Wilson suffered a finger injury and this started the demise of their 2021 season. They are currently 5-10 and 4th in the NFC West. With their loss last week to Chicago, they are eliminated from playoff contention. Some may wonder if Wilson finishes the season or if they put in Geno Smith to get some reps, so he can get used to being the future starting quarterback.

Offensively, Seattle averages 20.4 points and 305.2 yards per game. They rank 5th in the NFL in yards per rush (4.7), and seem to have found a solid running back in Rashad Penny. Penny finished last game with 135 yards on 17 carries and one touchdown. Seattle has had trouble finding a legit running back this season, so it is nice to see Penny emerge as a solid option for the Seahawks.

Defensively, the Seahawks have been solid this year. They rank 7th in the NFL in opponent points per game (20.5), 5th in opponent 4th down conversion rate (40.74%) and 2nd in opponent yards per rush (3.7). They held a high-scoring offense in the LA Rams to just 20 points two weeks ago and held the Cardinals to 23 points in weeks prior.

Final Lions-Seahawks Prediction & Pick

As ugly as Detroit's record is this year, they have been playing much better towards the end of their season. Seattle is just 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games as a favorite as Detroit is 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games overall. I believe Seattle wins this game, but there is enough room for the Lions to cover the spread whether Goff or Boyle are behind center. Take the points with Detroit on Sunday.

Final Lions-Seahawks Prediction & Pick: Detroit Lions +7.5 (-110)
