Nick Mullens took over the starting quarterback job for the San Francisco 49ers last week against the Oakland Raiders and came through with a huge performance. It was a game that made his name one of the most intriguing to follow heading into Week 10. In addition to that, he also played well enough to earn another start.
According to a report from Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, Mullens has announced that he will start once again for the 49ers in Week 10 against the New York Giants on Monday night football.
Mullens told reporters Tuesday that 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan informed Mullens that he will start against the Giants.
Even though his first performance came against a struggling Raiders' defense, Mullens turned heads. He actually played well enough for his performance to be called “historical” for a rookie.
Mullens completed 16 of his 22 pass attempts for 262 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. Those numbers were good enough to net him a 151.9 rating for the game.
At 23 years old, the former Southern Mississippi State star has a bright future ahead of him if he continues playing at the level he did in his debut. New York will offer him another great opportunity. The Giants have struggled mightily this season and their defense has been known to give up big games.
San Francisco is sitting at 2-7 heading into this week's game, while the Giants are even lower at 1-7.
If Mullens can put together another masterful performance, he could begin raising trade interest in him for the upcoming offseason. San Francisco will return to Jimmy Garoppolo next season, barring a major surprise, but there are plenty of teams around the NFL that could be interested in a young quarterback with big potential.
All of that being said, all eyes will be on Mullens in a key primetime matchup with the Giants on Monday night.
