Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray may have had one of the more underrated rookie seasons in recent memory.

Despite throwing for 3,722 yards and rushing for 544 more (including four touchdowns), Murray seemed like an afterthought in the quarterback discussion, particularly considering Lamar Jackson's MVP-caliber campaign and Patrick Mahomes' continued ascent as one of the best–if not the best–signal-caller in the NFL.

Nevertheless, Murray is drawing inspiration from his peers, and envisions a similar trend for himself with head coach Kliff Kingsbury at the helm (via Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk):

Kyler Murray is hoping his career path follows Mahomes and Jackson.

“I think their offenses are very quarterback friendly; I think we have a very quarterback-friendly offense,” Murray said, via Kyle Odegard of the team website. “And as far as the elite status goes, I don’t play to be mediocre. I think that’s a deal that can be obtained. So we’ll see next year.”

By all accounts, Murray was very impressive in his rookie campaign. He posted a respectable 64.4 completion percentage and ranked ahead of veteran quarterbacks such as Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers in terms of total quarterback rating.

Murray figures to have even more success if the Cardinals can upgrade their offensive line. The 22-year-old was the most-sacked quarterback in the league in 2019 (48).

Arizona might also look to improve their receiving corps through the NFL Draft. Although Larry Fitzgerald is returning for another season, the Cardinals lacked dependable pass-catchers outside of the future Hall of Famer and Christian Kirk.

Regardless, Murray wants to be great, and he thinks he is in the perfect system to become one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
