The Dallas Cowboys have made a few moves since the start of free agency to address their defense, and they're making it a priority to get better on that side of the ball. The moves are continuing to come in, as they recently agreed to a deal with a safety, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
“The Cowboys make another addition, this time agreeing to terms FA S Jalen Thompson, formerly of the [Cardinals], per me and [Jane Slater]. He gets a 3-year, $36M max deal done by Don Weatherell and Martin Fischman of [Klutch Sports],” Rapoport wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Thompson had been with the Cardinals for his entire career after he was taken in the supplemental draft in 2019. Last season, he appeared in 15 games and had his lowest defensive completion percentage of his career. He also finished with 95 tackles and one interception. Throughout his career, he has recorded 578 tackles and 37 passes defended, and nine interceptions.
The Cowboys are getting a player who should instantly improve their secondary, an area where they had a few injuries last season. The hope is that health is on their side next season, and they could improve their defense after the down year that they had.
That wasn't the only move that the Cowboys made on defense, as they acquired Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers. Gary was expected to be traded from the Packers this offseason, and the Cowboys were the team that came and made the right offer. If they're able to get consistent pressure at the line, players such as Thompson should have a field day in the secondary.
It will be interesting to see what other moves the Cowboys make in free agency and in the draft, and defensive coordinator Christian Parker should be satisfied with the group they're building for him in his first season.
