The Buffalo Bills have been hit with yet another injury. Cornerback E.J. Gaines will miss time with a groin injury, according to Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.
This is terrible news for Gaines, as it hurts his chance to start across from Tre'Davious White. Injuries have always been the best way to lose a job in football, and this is no different. The former Missouri Tiger is sure to lose valuable practice reps to other corners, such as Levi Wallace, Kevin Johnson, and Taron Johnson.
The Bills brought Gaines in on a one-year deal after a short stint in Cleveland. While it's true the former Brown performed below expectations, it's possible he could still be a contributor. The last time he was in Buffalo, he had one of the best years of his career in 2017. During that season, Gaines notched one pick, nine passes defensed, and three forced fumbles. He was a valuable member of coach Sean McDermott's defense and helped the Bills into the playoffs. It's clear that if anyone can get the best out of Gaines, McDermott can.
Although Gaines was likely to contribute on special teams and some defensive snaps, the loss isn't a huge one for Buffalo. The No. 1 cornerback position is locked up by White, while Wallace played capably last year. As long as Wallace continues to improve, the Bills have a formidable top two corners. Taron Johnson impressed while defending the slot last year, so this group doesn't seem to have a hole.
Hopefully, Gaines can get back on the field soon and make a strong unit even stronger.
