Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy did not exactly have a banner year in 2018, rushing for just 514 yards and three touchdowns while averaging a meager 3.2 yards per carry.

However, Bills general manager Brandon Beane thinks McCoy still has something left in the tank:

“I think LeSean still can play,” said Beane, according to Matt Parrino of New York Upstate. “If not, we would have made the decision to move on. I think he’s embraced the competition this spring.

He’s very confident, when you talk to him, that he still sees himself up here. And I don’t think you’re changing that. And I wouldn’t want him to think any different. But we’re focused on this year. That’s what we have him under contract for, and I definitely think he’s got enough left in the tank to help us in 2019.”

Buffalo also signed veteran running back Frank Gore this offseason, giving the Bills a very experienced tandem in the backfield. In addition, T.J. Yeldon and rookie back Devin Singletary will be battling for carries.

As for whether or not the backfield is too crowded? Beane thinks it's just fine:

“We’re looking for the best 53 players,” Beane said. “I don’t subscribe to the theory that you have minimums you’ve got to keep at a position. But I don’t go every year into camp and go, ‘We got to keep X number of O-linemen, X number of running backs.’ We’ve got to keep the best football players.”

McCoy originally joined the Bills back in 2015 and made the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons with the club, but at 31 years old with a lot of mileage on his legs and some injuries in his rearview mirror, you have to wonder just how much he actually does have left.
