It's clear that the Carolina Panthers will be shopping for a new quarterback in the offseason. Sam Darnold didn't pan out and Cam Newton's return wasn't what the franchise had hoped. It's up in the air whether Newton returns next season, but it sounds like the front office is leaving their options wide open.

According to Sports Illustrated's Schuyler Callihan, the “Panthers are ‘still open' to bringing back Cam Newton.” Re-signing the former MVP makes sense, especially considering how little hype the incoming rookie draft class is receiving. Having Newton on the roster allows Carolina to have a backup plan in case they are unable to obtain a better quarterback through the draft, free agency, or via trade.

Panthers' general manager Scott Fitterer explains the franchise's approach to the quarterback position this offseason.

“I think we're going through the whole process right now. It's a really important decision for us. Do we go the free agent route? Do we go through the draft? We're fairly far along in the quarterback evaluations on the college class. We've gone through it from a free agent standpoint. We'll look at all other options out there, but that's definitely a priority for us as well as the offensive line.”

This is an important offseason for the Panthers. They have plenty of young talent on the roster, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Offensively, they have valuable weapons in Christian McCaffrey and DJ Moore. Acquiring a talented quarterback would go a long way for this franchise, but keeping Cam Newton would be a nice safety net in case the offseason does pan out how the team hopes.

Keep an eye on the Panthers, as they're clearly searching for a way to improve the quarterback position.
