With organized team activities officially in the books, the Cleveland Browns confirmed that quarterback Tyrod Taylor will be the starter going into the 2018 NFL season. It seems he was able to solidify that notion by quite a wide margin.
There was speculation that rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield could potentially give Taylor a run for his money this offseason. However, according to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, Mayfield is not even in contention for the starting job:
It is difficult to speculate whether or not it is just part of Cleveland's plan for his development or if Taylor really is that much better at this point in time. Regardless, the Browns are hoping he can at least make it competitive in the near future.
It goes without saying that there is plenty of pressure that comes with being a No. 1 overall pick. Cleveland made quite the investment when they chose Mayfield over a slew of other promising quarterbacks in the 2018 NFL Draft. That said, they may want to start seeing some return soon.
However, the team is likely not too concerned given how talented a quarterback Taylor is. The former Pro Bowler has easily established himself as a legitimate starter in this league and will undoubtedly bring some stability under center. This will allow the Browns to take their time with Mayfield's development as the season plays out.
