The past week for the Cleveland Browns was certainly filled with plenty of off-field controversy regarding wideout Odell Beckham Jr. After the Browns failed to find a suitor for him ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline, they announced on Friday of their plans to release him.
Even amid much outside noise over this matter, the Browns orchestrated a standout performance in Week 9 against the Cincinnati Bengals with a 41-16 win.
A week after struggling to move the ball against the Pittsburgh Steelers' pass defense, quarterback Baker Mayfield guided the Browns to six scoring drives and also recorded two passing touchdowns in the contest.
In speaking after the game, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski kept it simple with his reaction to Mayfield’s showing on the day and takeaway of how he handled the past week.
“He’s a tough dude,” Stefanski said.
Stefanski also lauded his team for putting together one formidable performance against an AFC North rival.
“I like this team,” Stefanski said. “I like how this team works. I like how this team focuses on the task at hand. I think they like to compete with each other.”
While much attention was centered on how the Cleveland's wide receiver corps would step up following the departure of Beckham, several wideouts did just that against the Bengals. For one, receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones shined with a potent 60-yard receiving touchdown in the second quarter.
The Browns will now turn to a road matchup against the New England Patriots in Week 10, where they sure will look to build on momentum from this pivotal win over Cincinnati.
