Among the major acquisitions the Cleveland Browns made earlier this offseason was Pro Bowl wide receiver Jarvis Landry in a trade with the Miami Dolphins, as well as quarterback Tyrod Taylor in a deal with Buffalo.
Landry didn't take long to make a strong impression on the new team that gave him a five-year, $75.5 million extension shortly after he landed with the Browns. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, Landry has stepped up into a more prominent role in the passing game as the go-to option for quarterback Tyrod Taylor in training camp, with Josh Gordon out of the mix tending to a personal matter.
This early connection in training camp could lend well to Landry becoming a focal point in the offense that may allow him to put together a highly productive 2018 season. The 25-year-old has established himself as one of the premier wide receivers in the league behind his performance on the field, notching a career-best and league-high 112 receptions for 987 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in 2017. It also saw him become the fastest player to reach 400 career receptions through his first four seasons.
While being among the top possession wide receivers in the game, Landry has big-play ability, so he should be a major factor in the intermediate and short passing game. He will consistently be featured in the offense with Taylor looking to make quick throws while testing opposing secondaries with his strong arm down the field. The presence of Corey Coleman and eventually Gordon could lead to more opportunities for Landry to pose a larger receiving threat.
With Landry off to a promising start in training camp, it could set the table for an impressive 2018 campaign.
