Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon has returned to the team after spending extended time away from the club to attend to some personal matters and also to undergo a treatment program at the University of Florida.
But as early as Monday, the Browns have already left Gordon out of the roster for this Thursday’s preseason showdown with the Philadelphia Eagles at home, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.
Browns coach Hue Jackson has ruled receiver Josh Gordon out of Thursday night's dress-rehearsal game against the Eagles at FirstEnergy Stadium.
“No, Josh is not playing this Thursday night. No,” Jackson said. “That's for sure.”
While he’s already back with the team, Josh Gordon has yet to join his team in practice. For now, he is only limited to attending meetings and conditioning sessions until he gets a clearance to take part in on-field activities from the NFL, the Browns, and his own medical team.
Gordon’s situation can be a little distracting for the Browns, but the team seems willing to overlook all the hassle that entails having the wide receiver on the team so long as he will be able to translate his well-known talents on the field.
Despite playing in just five games last season, Gordon was able to record 335 receiving yards and a touchdown on 18 receptions. He is expected to do much better this time around, with a better quarterback in Tyrod Taylor under center and improved overall talent around him.
The hope for Gordon is that he’ll be ready by the start of Browns’ 2018 campaign, which will come on Sep. 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers at home.
