Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has been the talk of the town this week after wearing a $350,000 watch during his team's season-opening loss to the Tennessee Titans, and Hall of Fame defensive lineman Warren Sapp thinks Beckham's actions reprehensible.
“You can’t wear a $350,000 watch and play like a $2 bill,” Sapp said, according to Jarrett Bell of USA TODAY. “That don’t get it done. It was a nice-looking watch. Matched the uniform and everything. But I’d love to see you in the end zone, dancing or something. Come on, man.”
Beckham caught seven passes for 71 yards in what ended up being an embarrassing 43-13 defeat at home, at least temporarily putting all of the Browns hype on hold.
“I have no doubt that it’s all about you, son,” Sapp added. “You want to talk about your watch? The score is my concern. Whenever I hear one of these prima donnas put their issue in a team statement, then I’d be a little more accepting about it. I’m trying to figure it out. It’s about wearing a $350,000 watch on a football field now?”
Say what you want about Sapp, but he has a point.
Beckham talked an awful lot about Cleveland's potential heading into the 2019 campaign, so to lose by 30 points in your season opener while wearing expensive jewelry and making it one of the main topics of discussion is not a good look.
The Browns will get a chance to right the ship on Monday when they take on the New York Jets, another club looking for its first win of the year.
Beckham says he will keep wearing his watch, so we'll see if he is sporting it again on Monday night.
