After a long and tenuous process, the Washington Redskins finally traded left tackle Trent Williams to the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday morning, and it appears that the Cleveland Browns were never in the hunt.
The Redskins will receive a fifth-round pick in this year's draft and a third-round selection in exchange for Williams, a seven-time Pro Bowler in the last year of his current deal.
Williams' name had been thrown about in a number of rumors in the last few days, with teams from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Minnesota Vikings seemingly inquiring.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the Cleveland Browns were interested in Williams, but they never actually made an offer for the veteran.
The #Browns were also among the teams who showed interest in Trent Williams, but did not make an offer. Other teams sniffed around, but it came down to the #Vikings and #49ers. Familiarity for Trent Williams on SF’s coaching staff.

The Browns upgraded the offensive line this spring by signing former Tennessee Titans All-Pro right tackle Jack Conklin, but they still seemed to have a hole at the other tackle spot. Naturally, this seemed to make them potential suitors for the likes of Williams or Jason Peters.
However, Cleveland drafted Alabama offensive tackle Jedrick Willis Jr. with the tenth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and Willis will likely move to the left tackle spot. In fact, Willis said he had already been trying to make the transition in his preparation for the draft process.
The Browns might not be major players in the trade market, but they could certainly still make a splash or two in free agency.
Cleveland still has over $38 million in cap space, per Over The Cap, and they might be looking to pursue an upgrade at edge rusher via the likes of Jadeveon Clowney or Everson Griffen.
