The Cleveland Browns are in quite an enviable position with two picks in the top five of the upcoming NFL draft. They are widely tipped to draft their quarterback of the future with the first overall pick, which would leave them with the fourth pick that they could either use to get another top prospect or to trade away to a team desperate to move up.
But as Peter King of The MMQB notes, the Browns may not have much interest in trading down in the draft, according to a friend of Browns GM John Dorsey. Instead, they could have their sights set on picking quarterback Josh Allen and running back Saquon Barkley with their two top-five selections.
“This friend of Cleveland GM John Dorsey believes he’ll go Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen over Sam Darnold with the first overall pick, keep the fourth pick, and take Penn State running back Saquon Barkley. “I would be surprised if he traded down,” FOD told me. “This would be his chance to take his two offensive cornerstones for the next eight or 10 years.”
There was a report which came out last week that the Browns had limited their choice to either Allen or Darnold with the No. 1 pick. They had also been linked with Barkley possibly going No. 1 overall a couple weeks prior.
Article Continues BelowIt makes a good deal of sense for the Browns to target those two players. Allen has the upside to turn into a franchise quarterback and would greatly benefit from sitting out a year while Tyrod Taylor starts. Meanwhile, Barkley is arguably the best player in the entire draft, so getting him at No. 4 would be considered terrific value.
The chances of Barkley still being on the board at No. 4 should be decent with demand for quarterbacks likely to push him down the draft order.
Obviously, things could still change from now until draft day. But if the Browns do end Day 1 with both Allen and Barkley, that should be considered quite a strong haul.
