The NFL is filled with what-ifs in its history, including with trades that almost came to fruition. For one, the Cleveland Browns were once inches away from acquiring Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.

On Tuesday’s “The Dan Patrick Show,” Patrick touched on how the Browns came close to hauling in Wilson ahead of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Following their 0-16 season over the 2017 campaign, the Browns were looking for a quarterback to build their team around. Even as they were well projected to take Baker Mayfield with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, then Browns general manager John Dorsey had an eye on trading for Wilson.

In this trade that came close to being completed, Patrick noted that the Seahawks would have received the No. 1 overall pick in return and would have selected former Wyoming star Josh Allen.

Patrick further added that Wilson was “open” to joining the Browns, which would have come following his standout 34 passing touchdowns campaign in 2017.

Seahawks general manager John Schneider made for one questionable move ahead of the draft when he attended Josh Allen's Wyoming pro day. Schneider noted afterward that he simply wanted to “go check him out,” but this caused some confusion within Wilson's camp to the point where they called the Seahawks front office to inquire on just why he went out to watch Allen's pro day.

Overall, this what-if trade sure is an intriguing one, as the Seahawks would have jump-started a rebuilding process around Allen while the Browns would have had a versatile quarterback at their disposal.

While Wilson is currently in his ninth season with Seattle, it is not a guarantee he will feature with the team next season, especially as he was reportedly open to a trade in the offseason.

Thus, in the unpredictable world of the NFL, one can still not count out the possibility of Wilson soon donning a Browns jersey.
