Jerry Jones is not happy with some of the decisions that Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett made during last night's matchup with the Houston Texans. It was a tough loss for the Cowboys, who dropped to 2-3 on the season because of the loss. Houston, on the other hand, improved to 2-3 as they try to keep up with the rest of the AFC South.
In an interview shared by ESPN, Jones made his unhappiness with one call in particular known. That call was to punt in overtime on fourth-and-one from the Texans' 42. Houston ended up marching down the field and scoring the game-winning field goal following the punt.
“We were being outplayed. It's time for risks at that particular time.”
He also made it clear that he wasn't “second-guessing” his head coach, although that quote seems to suggest otherwise.
Garrett explained his decision to punt the football instead of risking it on fourth down.
“You know, we had a third-and-2 and we didn't make much on it and we just felt like at that point in the game, the way our defense was playing, the idea was to pin them down there.”
Dallas star running back Ezekiel Elliott also weighed in with his thoughts on potentially going for it on fourth down.
“I really don't remember the field position we were in, but obviously, you would like a chance to go for it on fourth-and-1, but I don't know if that was the best decision right there.”
While the Cowboys can look back and think they should have been more aggressive, the call at the time seemed correct. If they had gone for it and failed, the Texans would have had great field position.
Houston made a great drive and won the game. It's tough to lose that game, but Garrett probably made the right call.
