Earlier this week, the Dallas Cowboys made the decision to acquire former Pro Bowl wide receiver Amari Cooper in a trade from the Oakland Raiders in exchange for a 2019 first-round pick.
This has brought aboard a proven offensive talent that has the potential to be a big piece of the puzzle offensively as the No.1 option in the passing game. With that in mind, team owner Jerry Jones voiced that he believes Cooper will be a long-term addition to the mix, according to John Machota of The Dallas Morning News.
“Make no mistake about it, that's where all the consternation was about this move, that first round pick,” Jones said. “On the other hand, we really thought that if we had the opportunity that it's likely that receiver, if an outstanding receiver were there, that would be the pick. His youth had everything to do with it. And then the caliber of player that he was.
“We knew we had the opportunity here to get a player that frankly is proven, and have real youth involved so we can look at it long-term. We wouldn't give that first-round pick up if it wasn't for the long-term. And the other thing we can do is step in here and have immediate value for him for this year.”
Cooper is currently in the fourth year of his rookie deal that already has the fifth-year $13.9 million option for the 2019 season already picked up. This gives the Cowboys some leeway in terms of working out a new deal, which could come at some point during next offseason if things work out in the manner that is hoped.
Article Continues BelowThe 24-year-old is not too far removed from posting back-to-back 1,000 receiving yard campaigns to begin his career that earned him a pair of Pro Bowl selections. He has shown to have game-changing ability at the position, but it has been in his inconsistencies over the last couple of years along with the injury bug that has prevented him from taking that next step forward.
The Cowboys are quite desperate in their search of possessing a true No. 1 wide receiver that could take their passing game to the next level following the departure of both wide receiver Dez Bryant and tight end Jason Witten.
Cooper could quickly step in to become one of quarterback Dak Prescott's favorite target that could provide a different element to the offense that has been sorely lacking this season. Cooper will get his first chance to make an impact with Dallas in Week 9 with a matchup against the Tennessee Titans.
