Amari Cooper was acquired in a blockbuster trade by the Dallas Cowboys to fill the much-needed No. 1 wide receiver role. In order to acquire him, the Cowboys traded a first-round pick to the Oakland Raiders. Making that kind of an investment is not an easy decision, and the Cowboys are hoping to keep Cooper long-term.
According to a report shared by Pro Football Talk, Stephen Jones has made it clear that the Cowboys are already working hard to try to lock Cooper up to an extension.
“I just think he’s going to bring some energy. This isn’t going to be an ease into Amari Cooper situation. He’s going to get out there and play a lot, we’re going to get the ball to him.”
He continued on to confirm his belief that the two sides will be able to get something done.
“In general, we believe we’re going to sign Amari to an extension. That goes without saying. We feel like he was worth the No. 1, and I think part of making it worth it is that we eventually sign him to an extension.”
It did not take Cooper long to make his impact felt for the Cowboys. He caught a touchdown pass from Dak Prescott under 10 minutes into the game.
Throughout the six games that he played with the Raiders, Cooper caught 22 passes for 280 yards and a touchdown. He was not happy with the role that he had in the offense. Oakland's offense has been bad all season long, and there are a ton of question marks looking into the future.
Expect to see Cooper and the Cowboys get something done to keep him in town long-term. He is a big part of what they want to do in the future and is happy to have a fresh start.
