Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson did not perform at all well in his first regular-season game back from a torn ACL against the New England Patriots. The second-year QB went just 17-of-34 for 176 yards, a touchdown and an interception while running for 40 yards, losing a fumble and getting sacked three times in a 28-21 loss.

After the game, Watson openly owned up to his poor play and took responsibility for the team’s disappointing defeat.

“For me, personally, I think it was terrible on my part,” Watson said, via a transcript of his postgame comments (per Josh Alper of PFT). “So you can just – I just feel like you can put the ‘L’ on me because I’ll be way better than what I showed today. Just my energy was low and just overthinking the little things. But we just got to capitalize in the red zone, don’t turn the ball over and just kind of continue to do what we do. Take it one play at a time, be on the same page and just go from there.”

Watson’s Week 1 performance against the Patriots was clearly not what many people were expecting, especially after his outstanding outings during his injury-shortened rookie year raised the hype level surrounding him significantly.

Although, the young QB should be cut some slack considering it’s his first game back from a serious knee injury. It might still take some time before Watson truly returns to his best.

Nevertheless, Watson will still look to have a much better game in his next assignment in Week 2, which will be on the road against the Tennessee Titans.
