In the first few weeks of the season, there has been plenty of chatter surrounding the abnormally high amount of roughing the passer penalties being called around the league.
This has led various notable players in the NFL voicing their surprise with the number of penalties being assessed for this infraction. Among the latest to comment on the situation was Texans second-year quarterback Deshaun Watson, according to John McClain of The Houston Chronicle.

There has been some questionable officiating of these calls that have many players unsure of what type of action would be a clear definitive representation that would draw a flag. There have been several calls that have drawn ire in particular with Green Bay Packers outside linebacker Clay Matthews receiving roughing the passer penalties in each of the first three games played. What has stood out in each instance is that these were three different types of tackles made by Matthews that led to him voicing his frustration over the inconsistency of the calls.
Meanwhile, Texans Pro Bowl defensive end J.J. Watt has also come out to state that he wants the league to figure out the situation soon. All of this is seemingly pushing toward the league having to address the situation in order for the defensive players to have a clear understanding of what they can do. This would help situations be avoided such as Miami Dolphins defensive end Williams Hayes suffering a torn ACL while attempting to tackle Derek Carr in what he believed would be judged as the correct manner.
This is a matter that should draw more concern from the league as they work on finding a solution. Ultimately, only time will tell what the NFL will do to alleviate the situation.
