The Houston Texans have a new general manager in Brian Gaine, who has plenty of work to do this offseason. Among Gaine’s top priorities is to find a way to strengthen Houston’s defense that was constantly abused by opponents back in the regular season. Pertinent to that agenda is the Texans’ intent of signing linebacker Jadeveon Clowney to an extension deal.

When asked about it, Gaine did not discount the possibility of Clowney getting a huge new contract with Houston this offseason, per Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle.

“It's certainly on the horizon,” Texans general manager Brian Gaine said. “Right now, I'm in an evaluative period in terms of studying the roster and studying the team and learning the players in terms of how they performed. So, that requires 16-game film study, it requires a lot of other research and knowledge that I'm trying to gain right now, but certainly a player that's valued by the Texans organization, and in time, as we go through that process, we'll arrive to that conclusion.”

Jadeveon Clowney is scheduled to make $13.84 million next season, but his agent and the Texans are expected to negotiate soon a new contract that could make the former No. 1 overall pick the highest-paid non-quarterback player in the league.

Clowney was the brightest spot on the Texans’ defense that finished the regular season last in scoring defense and 20th in total yards allowed per game. The 24-year-old linebacker out of South Carolina recorded a career-high 9.5 sacks to go with 59 combined tackles.
