The Indianapolis Colts were blindsided by Josh McDaniels' decision to remain the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots after agreeing to become their next head coach. Fortunately, thy found their man in former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich.
Although Reich may not have been their first choice, there is plenty of optimism surrounding his hiring. Still, he was asked by former Colts punter Pat McAfee for his thoughts on the whole McDaniels situation, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero:
Answering Pat McAfee’s question on whether he loves or hates Josh McDaniels after what happened, Frank Reich says: “The backup role has suited me well in my career.”
Needless to say, Reich has made a career of thriving off being a team's second option. Prior to becoming a coach, he was one of the more prominent backup quarterbacks in his playing days with the Buffalo Bills. He spent most of his career in Buffalo serving as a safety net for often-injured quarterback Jim Kelly.
Additionally, he won a Super Bowl over McDaniels' Patriots with backup quarterback Nick Foles leading the way.
Reich is certainly not lying about his personal success as a backup, either. There were a number of instances in which he came in to help spur the Bills to a key win. However, his most prominent moment under center occurred during the AFC Wild Card Game versus the Houston Oilers. He rallied Buffalo from a 32-point deficit to beat Houston, 41-38, for the largest comeback in NFL history. That said, Reich is hoping to use his prowess as a backup to help start a resurgence with the Colts.
