Recently, the Indianapolis Colts shocked the NFL landscape when they signed their former quarterback, Philip Rivers, to the practice squad at the age of 44. The news comes in the wake of Daniel Jones' devastating Achilles injury that he suffered last week against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and opens the door for Rivers to become one of the oldest quarterbacks to ever suit up.
Further motivating the team to sign Rivers was the fact that backup quarterback Riley Leonard is also dealing with an injury of his own, leaving the Colts with a ton of question marks leading up to this weekend's game on the road against the Seattle Seahawks.
Recently, Colts head coach Shane Steichen didn't exactly provide a clear answer on what the plan is for that game.
“#Colts coach Shane Steichen on his starting QB for Sunday: ‘We'll see,'” reported NFL insider Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network on X, formerly Twitter. “Riley Leonard has a PCL sprain, will practice, but is up in the air. Steichen noted Philip Rivers ‘absolutely' came to Indy to play again.”
James Boyd of The Athletic also reported on the vibes at Stichen's press conference on Wednesday.
“My impression is that #Colts QB Philip Rivers will be playing sooner rather than later. Even as soon as this Sunday against the #Seahawks. HC Shane Steichen was very bullish on Rivers,” he reported.
The Seahawks may not be a very welcoming opponent for a quarterback playing his first game in four years, but such is life in the NFL.
