The Kansas City Chiefs fell short of winning back-to-back Super Bowls, but they have a solid chance to go back in 2021. There is no doubt the Chiefs are loaded with superstar talent. Patrick Mahomes is on another level, Travis Kelce is the best tight end in the league, and Tyreek Hill can take it to the house on any given play. Even Clyde Edwards-Helaire is a star in the making after having a solid rookie campaign.
While the offense is loaded, the defense has their own fair share of stars as well. Tyrann Mathieu and Chris Jones lock it down for Kansas City, as they're arguably the best in their respective position. The Chiefs are in a mediocre AFC West their division rivals all have question marks heading into the new season.
Even with a load of talent on the roster, the Chiefs still have some sleepers slumbering under the covers. Opposing teams will focus on the stars, which could create big opportunities for the guys on the roster that aren't of that caliber. There is one receiver that could emerge as another favorite target for Mahomes, while a defender has a chance to resurrect his career.
With that said, here are two underrated sleepers on the Chiefs roster.
Chiefs sleepers:
Mecole Hardman
Mecole Hardman has flashed, but he hasn't been consistent. Similar to Tyreek Hill, Hardman is a threat to score on any given play. However, he must be more consistent to reach his full potential. He finished 2020 with 41 receptions, 560 yards, and four touchdowns. With full seasons under his belt now, 2021 could be a big breakout year for Mecole Hardman.
Article Continues BelowThe Chiefs were unable to acquire any exciting pass catchers this offseason. Additionally, Sammy Watkins left in free agency where he now plays for the Baltimore Ravens. With a lack of competition in the receiver's room, Hardman could be in store for a big year.
Hill and Kelce will remain as Mahomes's favorite targets, but Hardman can easily become the third pass option, giving the Chiefs a boost in their offense. If that's the case, Kansas City will finish 2021 with one of the best offenses in the league yet again.
The other thing which has to be mentioned with Hardman is that while he hasn't fully blossomed as a pass catcher, he is still lethal on reverses and quick handoffs which take advantage of his speed on running plays. That is something the Chiefs must continue to do with Hardman, to maximize his skill set.
Taco Charlton
Taco Charlton has had it rough since joining the league in 2017. He hasn't lived up to expectations, and it was believed that he'd turn it all around in 2020. Instead, he only played seven games and finished with just seven total tackles, two sacks, and one forced fumble. With a full year to develop and learn with the Chiefs, Charlton could put himself back on track. If can live up to the expectations he had when he was first drafted by the Dallas Cowboys, the Chiefs pass rush could be dangerous this year.
Charlton is at his best when he runs freely at the quarterback. The Chiefs coaching staff is one of the best in the league and they'll find a way to get him involved. Untapping his potential is essential for him, as this is possibly his last chance to prove himself. He has the teammates around him to alleviate any pressure, so things are looking up for Taco Charlton.
