It has been a busy offseason for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Luckily, he was able to find time to get back to his roots at Texas Tech.
The Chiefs superstar returned to Lubbock to be the commencement speaker for his alma mater. Head coach Andy Reid was happy to see his star player show off his chops as a public speaker, via Ed Easton Jr. of the Chiefs Wire:
“I think it’s a really neat thing that he’s [Patrick Mahomes] having an opportunity to do with Texas Tech. He is passionate about sports,” Reid told reporters. “He’s passionate about Tech and I think it’s a neat thing that he’d have that opportunity to do it. Pat’s a pretty cool cucumber there. He’s a sharp kid and speaks well so I think he’ll have a nice presentation for them. The main thing is just to relax and enjoy the moment and what a great experience it is.”
It is safe to say that Mahomes has dealt with his fair share of pressure situations up to this point in his career with the Chiefs. Giving a speech to the graduating Class of 2020 should be no more difficult than navigating a comeback victory in the fourth quarter.
Prior to taking the NFL by storm with Kansas City, Mahomes was the big man on campus at Texas Tech from 2014 – 2016. He established himself as a bonafide prospect under the tutelage of now-Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury. There is no question that his tenure here paid huge dividends in his development under center.
Mahomes is now doing what he can to give back by speaking to the graduating class. Although the restrictions placed in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic have made it a virtual event, the reigning Super Bowl champ should have no problem offering up some congratulatory words.
