The Kansas City Chiefs ruled out quarterback Patrick Mahomes for Sunday's game with the Green Bay Packers. The 2018 NFL MVP is recovering from a dislocated patella suffered eight days ago in a win over the Denver Broncos.

Though Mahomes isn't ready to play in Week 8, his return appears to be sooner than the initially given three-week time frame. He practiced during the week in a limited fashion. Coach Andy Reid thinks he is “close” to return.

Reid described how close Mahomes is to returning in a dialogue between himself and the media on Friday. Via Adam Schefter:

What led to the decision to declare Patrick Mahomes out?

Reid: “That was our decision, not his. He wanted to play right after it happened, but he just needs a little bit of time there.”

What did he do on the practice field? Reid: “He did quite a bit. He’s close.”

Reid's “close” label could mean that Mahomes missed just one game for his injury. If so, he will return for next week's matchup with the Minnesota Vikings at Arrowhead Stadium.

Until Mahomes comes back, Matt Moore is the starter in Kansas City. He practiced with the first-team for the entirety of the week and did enough to win in-place of Denver in Week 7. Last week, Moore went 10 of 19 for 117 yards and a touchdown in the blowout win.

The Chiefs appear to be playing it safe with Mahomes' injury. The last thing they want is a setback. Nonetheless, he is blowing expectations out of the water and the Vikings should be scared.
