It's no longer a secret that the Atlanta Falcons have been trying to shop around wide receiver Julio Jones. While nothing about that has formed into something we can all take seriously, that doesn't mean people are going to stop fantasizing about the possibility of seeing him play for another team — like, you know, Travis Kelce's squad, the Kansas City Chiefs.
On paper, it does seem unfair for the Chiefs to add someone like Jones to their offense. For one, they already have stacked armaments downfield for Patrick Mahomes. Apart from Kelce, they also have the likes of Tyreek Hill, Mecole Hardman, and Demarcus Robinson. But it wouldn't hurt either for the Chiefs to get Julio Jones. If you ask Kelce about that possibility, he'd probably just tell you what he's already told people recently during a recent appearance on ESPN’s NFL Live (h/t Pete Grathoff of The Kansas City Star).
“I’ll tell you what, I’m intrigued,” Kelce said. “My eyes are open, I’m peeking at the headlines seeing where it goes. Listen, that’s a game-changer when you talk about guys that can make plays anywhere on the field, full route tree no matter where you put him. I mean that’s that’s a guy that changes the game and changes teams, so I’m interested to see where he lands.”
Creating a trade for Jones won't be easy for the Chiefs, considering that his current contract is still worth a lot. He is due to earn $15.3 million this year and $11.5 million in each of the next two years, with a potential out in 2023.
The rest of the NFL could just wish Jones would rather land somewhere else than with the Chiefs, who paced the NFL in the 2020 season with 301.9 passing yards per game.
