San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan thinks that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes' skills are best comparable to Denver Broncos legend John Elway. Mahomes has burst onto the scene this season after taking over for Alex Smith, and the former Texas Tech star has emerged as the frontrunner for NFL MVP.

Of course, he would've liked to have had another possession on Thursday night against the Los Angeles Chargers, as the visitors scored an incredible comeback win after trailing by two touchdowns with less than four minutes left in the game.

But that had little to do with Mahomes, who Shanahan is clearly a big fan of.

Here's what the 49ers coach had to say about Mahomes' incredible skill set, courtesy of Kirk Larabee of 247Sports.

“I haven’t studied (Mahomes), his NFL game, which would give a much better answer,” Shanahan said. “But what you can see that’s very obvious is how talented he is. He reminds me, just the way he moves, the way he throws, the way he looks in the pocket, he looks like John Elway to me. I’m not saying he’s John Elway, but if could compare him to someone, the arm talent, the mobility, his lower half and how he sits with his shoulders, that’s who he reminds me of when I watch him move.”

That's very high praise from Shanahan, and those types of comparisons will likely continue as long as Mahomes keeps playing at such an elite level.

Next up for the Chiefs is a battle with the Seattle Seahawks in Week 16.
