The arsenal of pass deliveries — from all sorts of arm angles — was on full display for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes during the team's dominant 34-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens on primetime. Of course, the most notable being the underhanded shovel pass he delivered to fullback Anthony Sherman that extended their lead early in the second quarter.
Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy revealed that the play-call is based off Sherman's own nickname, per Charles Goldman of the Chiefs Wire:
“Everybody talked about the screen, as well, that Sherm caught,” Bienemy said. “And that play was named ‘Smoked Sausage’ because we call Sherm ‘The Sausage.’ . . . One thing I will say, we have a very very creative group of people in this building that can come up with a variety of names and we keep it fun. And you know what? The guys embrace it, they make it fun as well. Because when you give them those particular plays they take ownership in it and they want it to work.”
While it may not be the most endearing name, there is no denying that the play was quite effective for the Chiefs. Not only did it allow Mahomes to once again show off his bag of tricks, they were also able to utilize Sherman's skill set in an age where fullbacks are considered to be a dying breed.
The call is indicative of what appears to be the dynamic in how the offense is ran by the pairing of Bieniemy and head coach Andy Reid. The Chiefs are having plenty of fun coming off their impressive Super Bowl run and continue to dominate teams in the process.
The Chiefs will look to keep it going in their high-profile matchup at home against the New England Patriots in Week 4.
