Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes raved about the performances of rookie offensive players Noah Gray and Cornell Powell on Friday.
Mahomes praised both Gray and Powell as guys who could make their presences felt for a Chiefs offense that is already as dangerous as any in the NFL:
“They can work. They know how to get out there and make plays happen. Noah has been really good – I think he has a veteran-type skillset where he knows how to get himself open even if it's not exactly what the play is designed to do. He knows how to get his eyes back and how to get on the quarterback's timing,” Mahomes explained, via Matt McMullen of Chiefs.com. “Then Cornell, he's a beast. He's big out there, running across the field and making some big catches in some tough, contested spots.”
The Chiefs took both Gray and Powell in the fifth round.
Gray didn't put up the most prolific numbers during his four-year career at Duke, but Mahomes seems to appreciate his savvy and understanding of the game. Powell, meanwhile, figures to be another weapon especially in the vertical passing game.
The former Clemson wide receiver averaged 16.6 yards per reception for the Tigers in 2020. He could be yet another asset in stretching opposing secondaries and might be even scarier if he gives Mahomes an outlet as someone who can make tough catches downfield.
As encouraging as the Chiefs' rookies might be, Mahomes' health is sure to bring about more smiles for the fans in Kansas City. The star signal-caller is making great progress in his recovery from offseason foot surgery, saying Thursday he could play a game right now, if necessary.
The Chiefs will be mighty scary if rookies like Gray and Powell gel with Mahomes from the jump.
