Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes isn't focused on getting a new contract, knowing others will take care of that so he can focus on football. Mahomes is entering the final guaranteed year of his contract, although there is also an option the team can pick up for the 2021 season. Although that hasn't been picked up officially, there is not a chance the team will be turning it down.
“That’s stuff that’s handled with other people,” Mahomes said via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “Obviously, I want to be in Kansas City a long time. I want to win a lot of football games.”
Mahomes has proven to be one of the best young quarterbacks in the league, and the expectation is that the Super Bowl victory on Sunday will be the first of many.
Many fans and the media are trying to get an extension done quickly, but Chiefs owner Clark Hunt tried to downplay how long it will take to get done.
“I’ve said before that I hope Patrick is here for his entire career and that’s going to be our goal,” Hunt said early during Super Bowl week via Brian Costello of the New York Post. “But there will be a right time, sometime in the next 12-15 months to extend Patrick and when I say right time, I mean right time for both, the player and the club. I don’t want to say it has to necessarily be this offseason but I will say it’s a priority to get it done.”
Mahomes is going to be focused on celebrating the Super Bowl and getting ready for next season, while others work behind the scenes to get a deal done.
