Tyrann Mathieu believes the turnaround isn't scheme-related- though that could be a part of it too- but chemistry-related. When the Chiefs allowed 29-plus points in each of their first five games played this season, Mathieu and the rest of the Chiefs gang didn't panic.
Article Continues BelowIt's cool how Mathieu said it was a “total team effort of staying committed to each other.” That sounds like a bunch of guys who really like playing with each other. It makes sense too, because Kansas City was largely able to keep their Super Bowl-winning defense together for the most part.
Whether the biggest factor is scheme-related or something intangible, it's showing up in the box score. Mathieu and the Chiefs have allowed an average of 11.2 points per game during their five-game winning streak. That is a championship-level defense.
If Kansas City's offense can begin to look like the unit from years past, the Chiefs could have something brewing once again in the AFC.
