Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has been in the league long enough to see similarities between his former and current players on the field. He's definitely coached some great ones. He likened Chiefs playmaker Patrick Mahomes's playing style to that of Pro Football Hall of Famer and former NFL quarterback Brett Favre.
“They think alike when that football’s in their hand. It’s the same thought process. They both have phenomenal vision, like fighter pilot vision. They see everything. And then they’re going to rip your heart out. Every throw they’re going to gut you,” Reid said.
Both Reid and Favre spent time together during their days back with the Green Bay Packers. The pair coincidentally arrived at Wisconsin prior to the start of the 1992 season. Andy Reid first served as the Packers' offensive assistant for two years before becoming the team's assistant offensive line & tight ends coach from 1995 to 1996. He went on to serve as the quarterbacks coach & assistant head coach for two more seasons before relocating to Philadelphia to coach the Eagles.
On the other hand, Brett Favre had a 16-year stint with the Packers from 1992 to 2007 which helped turn him into a marquee star in the NFL. He garnered nine Pro Bowl appearances, three first-team All-Pro selections, and a Super Bowl XXXI championship crown before moving on to play for the New York Jets in 2008.
Reid already sees Mahomes to be trending on the same trajectory that the legendary Favre once took. The former Texas Tech product has already established himself as one of the league's best young stars at the age of 25. He has garnered a league MVP award, two Pro Bowl appearances, a Super Bowl LIV title, and the Super Bowl LIV MVP honor in his first four seasons in the league.
By way of his record-breaking contract extension, Chiefs Kingdom will still see more of Mahomes in the years to come. Only time will tell if he will eventually turn out to be at par or even greater than Favre by the end of his playing career. For now, it's looking like a pretty safe bet.
