Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson and Kansas City Chiefs signal-caller Patrick Mahomes are two of the NFL's biggest rising stars, but their relationship goes far beyond simply playing the same position.

Watson and Mahomes have known each other since they were teenagers and both entered the NFL the same year in 2017, with Watson starting immediately for the Texans before tearing his ACL midway through the season and Mahomes learning under Alex Smith for a year before exploding on the scene in 2018.

On Tuesday, Watson appeared on Pro Football Talk Live and talked about his kinship with Mahomes and how he hopes he and the Chiefs star can become the next great quarterback duo in the league, following in the footsteps of Tom Brady and Peyton Manning:

“We’ve been boys since coming out of high school, we’ve trained together all through college,” Watson said. “It’s something we’ve talked about for a long, long time and now we have an opportunity to do it. I’m looking forward to all the big games. Of course we’re both in the AFC so hopefully we get that Peyton and Tom Brady type of match each and every year.”

Watson and Mahomes have yet to face off in the NFL, as the Texans and Chiefs did not play one another this season. They will, however, meet next year, marking perhaps the first of many great games between the two young signal-callers.

The Tom Brady-Peyton Manning matchup was something that everyone looked forward to while Manning was still in the league, so, hopefully, Watson and Mahomes can rekindle that same magic.
