The Miami Dolphins have made it clear this NFL offseason that they have remained highly committed to quarterback Ryan Tannehill being the unquestioned starting quarterback for the 2018 campaign. This hasn't wavered any point since last season.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, head coach Adam Gase voiced that notion once again on Thursday stating that the team has no interest or intention on bringing a veteran quarterback aboard like they did last year with Jay Cutler even if Tannehill gets hurt again.
“No. Nope. Nope,” coach Adam Gase told reporters on Thursday regarding whether the team would need to sign an outside quarterback if Tannehill gets injured again.
The Dolphins haven't made any significant move at the position this offseason as the team currently has David Fales, Brock Osweiler, and recently added Bryce Petty to the mix. Each of these quarterbacks has varying levels of experience in the NFL regarding playing time up to this point in their careers.
There had been talks that Miami was interested in possibly taking a quarterback in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, but the team elected to select former Alabama safety Minkah Fitzpatrick with the 11th overall pick. The team had been in the position to snag a quarterback if they desired to do so as they could have simply moved up one spot with the Oakland Raiders to snag UCLA's Josh Rosen before the Arizona Cardinals made a move to do so. Louisville's Lamar Jackson was also still available when they were on the clock in the first round.
All of these actions have shown the franchise is committed to Tannehill being their long-term answer under center and are comfortable with their backup situation. He is still making his way back from a torn ACL that cost him the entire 2017 season, but he appears to be on track to be the field for this upcoming campaign. Regardless of what happens with Tannehill over this next season, the team looks to be confident in their in-house replacements if needed.
