Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer wants his team to get its hard-nosed mentality back moving forward after a disappointing finish to the 2018 regular season.
The Vikings entered Week 17 needing to either beat the Chicago Bears or have the Philadelphia Eagles lose in order to make the playoffs, and neither worked out for Zimmer's team as they were eliminated from postseason contention.
Now, the Vikings coach is turning his focus on how to get things back on track, and he seems to have a pretty good idea of what needs to happen.
From Ben Goessling of the Star Tribune:
“We had a chip on our shoulder last year,” Zimmer said in his season-ending news conference Thursday. “I don't know that that chip was there. And we're going to get it back. You can look at a lot of statistics, but quite honestly, this football team through the years I've been here had that nasty, ‘We're going to win no matter what the situation is' mentality, and I don't know that we had it [this season].
“It's a different vibe with this football team, and I don't know exactly why … for some reason, we didn't finish the games like we did before. We're going to get that mentality back.”
It was certainly an underwhelming season in Minnesota after the team appeared to be set for big things.
But Zimmer will hope to bring back the aggressive mentality heading into the 2019 season, with the Vikings undoubtedly needing to make some tweaks if they want to return to the playoffs.
