The New Orleans Saints will take a similar approach to quarterback Drew Brees' future as the offseason commences.
Brees had contemplated retirement prior to deciding to play again in 2020. Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said the team will once again wait for Brees to make a definitive decision before addressing the quarterback position:
“I don’t think it’s a lot different from last year,” Loomis said, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “We’ll wait for him. We’ve got a lot of other planning to do. There’s more unknowns right now than there are knowns in the sense that we don’t yet know what the cap’s going to be.”
There is a lack of clarity with respect to Brees' desire to keep playing.
The Saints veteran said he was retiring at the end of the season prior to New Orleans' Divisional Playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brees' wife, Brittany, also revealed he played with injuries beyond the broken ribs and collapsed lung suffered earlier in the season, including a torn rotator cuff.
However, Brees seemed slightly more unsure as to what the future would hold after the game. He said he would take his time before reaching a decision:
“Well, I'll answer this question one time, and that is that I'm going to give myself an opportunity to think about the season, think about a lot of things – just like I did last year – and make a decision,” Brees said after the loss, per the team's website.
The Saints are already facing tremendous challenges when it comes to the salary cap. But Brees' eventual decision might also determine how aggressive Loomis is in the quarterback market, especially with a number of signal-callers expected to change teams this spring.
