The 2018 NFL Draft is expected to be one of the more quarterback-heavy events in recent years. Now it looks as though the New Orleans Saints are trying to get in on the action. This year's draft features a bevy of quality quarterback prospects. However, they all may be out of reach for the Saints who currently own the 27th overall pick.
As a result, they have started to make calls about potentially moving up, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport:
Article Continues BelowThe Saints have made plenty of calls about making a big leap up from pick No. 27, I’m told. Could be due diligence in case a certain player (perhaps a QB) falls. But they will be well-prepared to move tonight if it comes down to it.
The news certainly comes as no surprise given their situation under center. Although Drew Brees is still one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, his days are numbered at 39 years old. That said, it would make plenty of sense to bring in a promising prospect to develop behind Brees as he finishes his illustrious career within the next few years.
Furthermore, head coach Sean Payton recently admitted that he attempted to acquire a potential franchise quarterback in last year's draft. He revealed that if the Kansas City Chiefs had taken cornerback Marshon Lattimore, New Orleans would have selected Patrick Mahomes. That said, it seems the Saints are not willing to let another quality prospect slip through their grasp.
Since most of this year's quarterback class is expected to go within the top-10, making such a jump from 27 would come at a great cost. However, one name that is expected to slip in the first round is Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson. If Jackson is still available within striking distance of the Saints' pick do not be surprised to see them make a move.
