Of all the quarterbacks in the NFL, no quarterback possesses the aura of both calm familiarity combined with intense mystique that Aaron Rodgers does. And for New York Jets rookie quarterback Zach Wilson, that exact combo led the number 2 overall pick to have a magical day on Wednesday during the Jets' joint practice with the Green Bay Packers.
Though he and all his teammates got to enjoy the ease that comes with Rodgers' calming presence, Wilson couldn't help but feel a bit starry-eyed upon meeting Rodgers:
âJames was a big fanboy; he was getting a little nervous,â Wilson joked, via the Associated Press. âNah, Iâm a big fanboy, too. We all kind of got to pretend like weâve been there before. We enjoy just being out here and being able to talk to him.â
Wilson recently hailed Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady as the greatest QB to every play the game, but there is still arguably none more talented from a throwing standpoint than Rodgers. So it figures that Zach Wilson, just a rookie, would have something to learn.
âHe was always the game I always wanted to watch on Sundays,â Wilson said. âI always made sure I was watching his full games, what he was doing.âThe biggest thing I picked up ⊠just how calm and collected he is. Heâs kind of just out there, almost like heâs just messing around, playing backyard football. Heâs having a good time and he makes it work.â
Wilson has a bright future ahead of him, as he enters his career with a Jets team that certainly has the potential to be a supremely more talented roster than the one that former Jets QB and No. 2 overall pick Sam Darnold inherited.
Looking up to and learning from greats like Rodgers and Brady will certainly be an important part of his future to come.
