Adam Gase will have to see Tom Brady twice again in 2019, and he isn't happy about it. The new coach of the New York Jets spoke at the NFL owners' meetings this week. He cracked a joke when asked about a potential Brady retirement.
When asked how much longer Brady would play, Gase replied:
“I don’t know. When I wake up, I feel like shit. And he’s older than me,” according to Manish Mehta of The New York Daily News.
Gase is no stranger to Brady; he spent the past three seasons coaching against him twice a year as the coach of the Miami Dolphins.
Article Continues BelowAs the coach of multiple AFC East teams, Adam Gase has a unique perspective. Gase is understandably peeved about having to prepare for Brady twice a year for the foreseeable future. Brady will turn 42 in August, but has shown no signs of slowing down. He has repeatedly shut down any talk of retirement, and has insisted he plans to play at least until he is 45.
Brady made the Pro Bowl at 41 last year, and led New England to yet another championship. Gase is heading into his first year in the Big Apple, and has high expectations to meet. The Jets' fan base is expecting him to help Sam Darnold take his game to the next level, and Gase will be under immense pressure to deliver.
Adam Gase is still only 40, but seems like a grizzled veteran in the coaching business. He went 10-6 and made the playoffs in his first year as Miami's coach, but things quickly went downhill from there due to injuries. He will get a fresh start with the Jets, but the one thing he can't seem to escape is Brady.
