Not much was expected from the New York Jets going into the 2017 NFL season. Which is why it may have come as a bit of a surprise to see they were able to pull out five victories.

It appears fans were not the only ones surprised by what New York did last season. According to Bleacher Report's Tyler Dunne, safety Jamal Adams said the team was still going through the motions:

“Everybody was used to losing,” Jets safety Jamal Adams said. “You can always tell that vibe. I came in, and it was like everybody wanted to do the bare minimum. They didn't want to go above and beyond. They didn't want to take that extra step.

“They didn't want to be uncomfortable, [but] to be great, you have to be uncomfortable. You have to be willing to sacrifice and willing to do the little things. And the team, the organization, just wasn't doing those things.”

Needless to say, Adams' comments should be cause for worry in New York. Sure the team has not been truly competitive for the past several years now. However, dealing with a lackluster effort from such a young team is never a positive sign.

Fortunately, it is safe to say that Adams was going full-throttle. The Jets selected Adams with the sixth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and he certainly did not disappoint. He quickly established himself as one of the most promising young defenders in the league after finishing his rookie campaign with 83 tackles, 2.0 sacks, and six pass defenses.

Of course, head coach Todd Bowles has done what he can to downplay any talk about a lack of effort. However, there may be some truth to it if one of the team's key players was openly willing to discuss it. That said, Bowles will need to find a way to get the most out of his players if the Jets are going to be competitive this season.
