The New York Jets are currently 0-3 with Sam Darnold missing the past two games with mononucleosis. The Jets have a bye week in Week 4, but Darnold thinks that the team is going to turn things around upon his expected return in Week 5.
“We’re going to go on a little run here,” Darnold said, via the New York Post. “It’s going to be fun, but it’s going to take a lot of work. I know a lot of the guys on the team are willing to put in that work.”
Coming into this season, there was some optimism surrounding the Jets with the amount of talent this offseason. Along with the players they added, they also brought in Adam Gase to give a much-needed boost to the offense.
Unfortunately for New York, due to their second-year quarterback being sidelined the past couple of weeks, their offseason acquisitions haven't been able to contribute much. Getting Darnold back could prove to be beneficial for the offense, but that doesn't fix the other issues on the roster.
Without Darnold, the offense has scored just three points in the past two games. The only two touchdowns that the Jets have scored since Week 1 came on a fumbled punt return and a pick-six against the New England Patriots on Sunday.
Aside from the offense, the defense hasn't been much better on the other side of the ball. The Jets have only gotten five sacks this season (tied for fourth-least in the NFL) and have allowed 375.3 yards per game (12th most in NFL).
Therefore, with or without Darnold, New York is going to need more than just their quarterback getting back into the fray to get their season back on track.
