According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, former Los Angeles Rams cornerback Trumaine Johnson intends to sign with the New York Jets when free agency officially begins on Wednesday.
Johnson became expendable for the Rams after they acquired Marcus Peters from the Kansas City Chiefs and Aqib Talib from the Denver Broncos, along with the other secondary pieces they have in place. As a result, Trumaine became arguably the best cornerback available on the open market, and with their heaps of cap space, the Jets didn't hesitate.
The former third-round pick has spent all six years of his NFL career with the Rams, and while he has never made a Pro Bowl, he's considered to be a solid number one corner. He was on the franchise tag in each of the last two seasons, and while Los Angeles wanted to keep him, they couldn't continue to justify paying his high price tag with other pieces at their disposal.

The Jets finished 25th in total defense, especially struggling to stop opposing passing attacks. Adding Johnson is a huge upgrade for a franchise that will likely continue to be active on the free agent market. They inked Josh McCown for another year earlier on Tuesday, and they're rumored to be in on former Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater.
In addition to New York, the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers were rumored to have interest in Johnson, but apparently they weren't able to watch the Jets' offer.
